{"id":2732,"date":"2023-10-08T06:43:46","date_gmt":"2023-10-08T06:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/msrm.mn\/?p=2732"},"modified":"2023-10-08T06:43:46","modified_gmt":"2023-10-08T06:43:46","slug":"pastures-conservation-and-climate-action-mongolia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/msrm.mn\/?p=2732&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Pastures, Conservation and Climate Action, Mongolia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2022\u00a0 Carbon offsets in rangelands<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 Biodiversity Conservation<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 Livelihoods and wellbeing<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;Pastures, Conservation and Climate Action, Mongolia&#8217;\u00a0<span data-scayt_word=\"programme\" data-scaytid=\"6\">programme<\/span>, managed by the Mongolian Society for Range Management (<span data-scayt_word=\"MSRM\" data-scaytid=\"8\">MSRM<\/span>), is a community-led initiative which is taking place at three different sites across Mongolia. For the initial commitment period (2015-19) it will be financed through the sale of &#8216;carbon plus&#8217; credits from herders&#8217; activities at the three sites. &#8216;Carbon plus&#8217; denotes that these credits are about much more than just carbon. In line with the new Plan Vivo standard, the &#8216;Pastures, Conservation and Climate Action, Mongolia&#8217;\u00a0<span data-scayt_word=\"programme\" data-scaytid=\"7\">programme<\/span> is making important contributions to nomadic herders&#8217; livelihoods and wellbeing, to the conservation of a globally important biodiversity heritage and to a range of ecosystem services, as well as to carbon sequestration through enhanced rangeland management.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is being achieved in the following ways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0 Participating herder groups receive direct payment for ecosystem services (<span data-scayt_word=\"PES\" data-scaytid=\"9\">PES<\/span>) over the initial 4 year period, which amount to 70% of the\u00a0<span data-scayt_word=\"PES\" data-scaytid=\"10\">PES<\/span>\u00a0sale price, less a 10% risk buffer.<br \/>\n2.\u00a0\u00a0 These payments are based on a suite of interlinked activities, which are monitored according to agreed and approved protocols and variously include:<br \/>\na.\u00a0\u00a0 Carbon sequestration through improved land managed and reduced grazing pressure, achieved through restoration of traditional seasonal mobility between pastures and\/or reduction in livestock numbers;<br \/>\nb.\u00a0\u00a0 Biodiversity conservation through herders&#8217; cooperation to protect key wildlife species and habitats, for example Mongolian gazelle, ibex, red deer, marmot,\u00a0<span data-scayt_word=\"saxaul\" data-scaytid=\"16\">saxaul<\/span>\u00a0forests, and through protection of key grassland resources.<br \/>\nc.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Improvements in livelihoods\/ well-being, for example through herders&#8217; collaborative processing and marketing of livestock products, livelihood diversification, protection of locally important cultural landscapes and resources.<br \/>\nFinancial payments from the scheme are thus designed to provide holistic support to the linked human- environmental systems of Mongolia&#8217;s rangelands.<br \/>\nThe credits generated by the\u00a0<span data-scayt_word=\"programme\" data-scaytid=\"28\">programme<\/span>\u00a0are certified by the rigorous and internationally\u00a0<span data-scayt_word=\"recognised\" data-scaytid=\"57\">recognised<\/span>\u00a0Plan Vivo Standard.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0<span data-scayt_word=\"programme\" data-scaytid=\"29\">programme<\/span>\u00a0is collaborating with more than 100 herder households with territories covering a total area of some 77,<span data-scayt_word=\"000ha\" data-scaytid=\"59\">000ha<\/span>., to sequester more than 100,000\u00a0<span data-scayt_word=\"tCO\" data-scaytid=\"60\">tCO<\/span><sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0through improved grazing management practices. This equates to significant expected financial benefits, to be delivered and administered through existing community\u00a0<span data-scayt_word=\"organisations\" data-scaytid=\"61\">organisations<\/span>, which will make direct payments to herders.
